Library Assistant (18 hours per week), Parker Memorial Library (Dracut)

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Library Director, the Library Assistant performs customer service and administrative duties relating to library materials, as well as other related work, as required.

This is a Part-Time 18/hr per week Position.  The scheduled hours are: Wednesday: 4:30 - 8:30pm; Thursday: 8:30am - 1:30pm; Friday 12:00pm - 4:30 pm; Saturday 12:00pm - 4:30pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Put away books in all sections

·         Search for requested Interlibrary Loan items

·         Shelf reading

·         Search for overdue materials

·         Register and assist new patrons

·         Resolve patron disputes pertaining to overdue fees, etc.

·         Interact with and provide assistance to patrons with a wide variety of needs and abilities

·         Work accurately with detailed information

·         Work independently

RECOMMENDED MIMINUM REQUIREMENTS

          

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent; two years of library experience or customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL

Knowledge of the principals and practices of library work.

Customer service skills.

Ability to use available resources to provide library services to library patrons

Computer skills; interpersonal skills; written and oral communication skills; planning and organizational skills

SUPERVISION

Works under the general supervision of the Library Director according to established procedures and department policies and standards; duties require independent judgment and initiative.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in library conditions; work is affected by seasonal fluctuations, such as the school calendar and seasonal programs; regular schedule includes weekend and evening hours.

·         The employee operates computers, fax machine, scanner, copy machine, and other library and office equipment.

·         The employee has access to confidential patron records, and circulation information.

·         Errors could result in delay of service to patrons, monetary loss, or damage to library equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee works in normal office conditions and is required to sit, talk, listen, stand, walk, stoop, and reach with hands and arms to access documents and files; employee seldom lifts up to 40 pounds.  The position has normal vision requirements.  Equipment operated includes office machines, telephone and computers.  The Town of Dracut requires a CORI, physical exam and drug screen post offer.
